This feature is only available in MetaTrader.
The ‘Close By’ function lets you close two opposite trades (Buy and Sell) at the same time, with only one spread cost charged instead of two.
For example, if you have:
A Buy position on EURUSD
A Sell position on EURUSD
You can use Close By to offset them against each other. The system will automatically calculate the profit or loss difference between the two trades and close both with one action.
Is “Close By” better than manually closing two trades?
Yes, in most cases, especially if you're trying to save on spread costs.
When you close trades manually one by one, you pay the spread for both the Buy and Sell orders.
When you use Close By:
Typically results in only one spread cost rather than two.
This can help reduce your trading cost slightly.
It’s also quicker and avoids delays in fast-moving markets.
What happens if my Buy and Sell positions are different lot sizes?
If the lot sizes are not equal, the smaller position is fully closed, and the remaining volume stays open.
Example: You have a Buy 1.00 lot and a Sell 0.70 lot.
When you use Close By:
0.70 lots from both trades will be closed (offset).
You will still have Buy 0.30 lots remaining open.
This helps you partially close trades while keeping control over your remaining position.
Is “Close By” available on both MT4 and MT5?
Yes! The Close By feature is available on both MT4 and MT5 platforms. However:
Your trading account must support hedging (having both Buy and Sell positions open on the same symbol).
Some brokers may offer only “netting” accounts, where this function is not available.
Check with your broker or platform settings to make sure your account type supports hedging.
How do I access “Close By” on mobile apps?
Here’s how to use Close By on your MT5 iPhone or Android app:
Go to the “Trade” tab in your mobile app.
Tap the position you want to close.
Select “Close Position.”
Then choose the option called “Close By.”
A list of opposite positions will appear. Choose the one you want to close it against.
Confirm the action.
The app will handle the rest and offset the two positions.
Note: On the MT4 mobile application, the steps are very similar. You’ll find “Close By” after tapping on the open position.
